Are Bump Stocks Legal in Hawaii?
Before you bring a bump stock into Hawaii, read this. State law here goes further than federal law, and the difference matters.
What the law says
Hawaii’s ban is codified at HRS Β§ 134-8 (“multiburst trigger activator”).
- Controlling law: HRS Β§ 134-8 (“multiburst trigger activator”)
- Enacted: 2018
- Penalty: Felony
Hawaii bans multiburst trigger activators, a statutory definition that includes bump stocks.
The federal picture
In Garland v. Cargill (decided June 2024), the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the ATF rule that had reclassified bump stocks as machine guns. Since that ruling, bump stocks are legal under federal law. That does not help you in Hawaii: the state’s own ban operates independently of federal law and remains fully enforceable.
